Picot and Thread Spacer Gauge

Ann’s Tatting Gauge

One of my tatting students, Ann, shared with me, the “picot gauge” (pictured) she made to help her make consistent picots, with real precision. This is a fabulous option for new tatters getting used to tatting thread tension and picot spacing, or for those who love consistency.

Ann, made this gauge by marking the measurement on the back of an old card, and then cutting out the different size spacers. She then would hold up the desired size spacer to her tatting picot thread each time she made a picot, to make sure she was using the same size picot throughout her project. This can also be used as a thread spacer gauge, as can a measuring tape, or store-bought picot gauge.

I tend to like the inconsistency of handmade tatting, so often don’t try too hard for perfection. But I do really like this option as a tool in my tatting toolbox, for those times when a project requires more precision than my natural tatting.

You can also buy a tatting picot gauge on the Handy Hands website and/or on Amazon.com. (I do not make any money off of these products or links).
