Thread Dyeing Small Tatting Projects (Full Tutorial & Recipes)

Fun and quick thread dyeing at home using basic supplies from your kitchen. Create radiant yellow, dusty pink, pink, dark pink/burgundy with non-toxic, basic, and easy to find ingrediency.


How it works…

Acid-Base indicator (a.k.a. pH indicator) are substances that change color with pH, such as Turmeric.

Base substances trigger pH change, such as the alkaline base Baking Soda.

Turmeric = Acid-Base Indicator

Baking Soda = Base

Turmeric + Baking Soda = Color change into pink/red spectrum



Basic At Home Dyeing Supplies:

Turmeric

Baking Soda

White or Off-White Cotton Thread (or Finished Project)

Shallow Bowl

Warm Water

Towel

Spoon


 

Dark Pink/Burgundy Dye Recipe

Place cotton item in shallow bowl, sprinkle with ½ Tbsp Turmeric, then poor 1 cup warm water over turmeric, mix and let set for 1 Minute.

Remove cotton item, place on towel and let dry.

Rinse bowel.

Place cotton item in clean bowel, poor in ½ cup warm water. Add 1 tsp baking soda, mix and then let set for 1 minute.

Remove cotton item, place on clean towel and let dry.

Rinse with clean water and then let dry.

 

Light Pink Dye Recipe

Place cotton item in shallow bowl, sprinkle with 1 tsp Turmeric, then poor 1 cup warm water over turmeric, mix and let set for 30 seconds.

Remove cotton item, place on towel and let dry.

Rinse bowel.

Place cotton item in clean bowel, poor in ½ cup warm water. Add ½  tsp baking soda, mix and then let set for 30 seconds.

Remove cotton item, place on clean towel and let dry.

Rinse with clean water and then let dry.
