Handmade Basket Handles

My friend Sarah ( of the YouTube channel Dan & Sarah Makers) and I recently met up and filmed our second video collaboration. Last time we dyed seagrass baskets ( “Dying Baskets” post), and this time our project focussed on making handmade handles for the revamped baskets. Our inspiration are the wonderful African market baskets and their leather handles.

In this post, and accompanying video, we once again attempted to update the baskets by doing something neither of us have tried before.

Supplies:

  • Basket(s)

  • Upholstery piping tubing (60” for each handle)

  • Raffia (one bundle each handle)

  • Batting remnants (roughly 5”x3” each handle)

  • Leather remnants ( 6”x3” each handle)

  • Waxed cord, upholstery thread, or leather lacing

  • Leather needle or 5” upholstery or doll needle

  • Scissors

  • Leather punch, sewing machine with heavy duty needle, Dremel/rotary tool, drill with fine drill bit, etc. (for puncturing holes in leather for lacing/threading)
