Dying Baskets

My friend Sarah ( of the YouTube channel Dan & Sarah Makers) and I recently met up and filmed our first video collaboration, although we have been encouraging, inspiring, and sharing ideas for years. Our project focussed on revamping two large seagrass baskets that Sarah scored at a Goodwill warehouse bulk store, where you dig through bins of junk and possibly treasures, and pay by the pound for whatever you decide to take home.

In this post, and accompanying video, we attempted to update the baskets by dying them. Something neither of us have tried before.

Supplies:

  • One bottle of liquid Rit dye

  • One or more seagrass or natural fiber basket(s)

  • Large pot(s) for boiling water

  • One large beverage tub or bucket for dipping basket(s) in dye

  • Pot holders

  • String and scissors

  • Rubber gloves

  • Wooden spoon

  • Salt

  • Water

  • Stove for boiling water
